Our client is an established international commodities trading firm with a growing presence in bulk commodities. The firm is expanding its coal trading platform and is looking to strengthen its origination capability across Africa, working closely with producers, miners, logistics providers and end-buyers across global markets.
Role Overview
The Coal Originator will be responsible for developing and executing origination strategies across African coal supply, sourcing material directly from producers and mine owners and structuring competitive supply arrangements for the trading desk. The role sits close to trading, logistics and finance, with a mandate to build long-term relationships and generate repeat flow.
This is a commercial, relationship-driven role with direct impact on volumes, margins and the growth of the coal business.
Key Responsibilities

Originate thermal and/or metallurgical coal from African producers (Southern, West and East Africa as applicable).

Develop and manage relationships with:

Coal mine owners and operators

Local producers and marketing arms

Logistics providers, rail operators and port authorities
Structure and negotiate:
Offtake agreements
Spot and term supply contracts
Marketing and agency arrangements
Work closely with internal trading teams to:
Price and structure deals
Align origination with trading strategy and risk appetite
Coordinate with shipping, operations and finance teams to ensure smooth execution from mine to port and onward delivery.
Monitor market fundamentals, supply developments, logistics constraints and regulatory changes across African coal markets.
Support expansion into new African jurisdictions and supply basins as the platform grows.
