We are seeking an experienced Japanese Power Trader to join our clients proprietary trading desk. The successful candidate will take ownership of building, managing, and optimising trading strategies within the Japanese electricity market, leveraging both fundamental and quantitative approaches. This is a high-impact, PnL-driven role offering full autonomy, direct capital allocation, and access to best-in-class analytical and execution infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead proprietary trading activities across Japan’s power markets, focusing on both spot and forward positions (JEPX and OTC).

  • Develop, implement, and manage discretionary or systematic trading strategies based on short-term market dynamics, weather forecasts, renewable output, grid constraints, and demand/supply fundamentals.

  • Analyse generation mix, congestion patterns, demand curves, interconnection flows, and policy-driven shifts in the Japanese energy sector.

  • Manage exposure to basis risk, shape risk, and imbalance costs while optimising PnL within defined limits.

  • Collaborate with data engineers and quants to refine models for forecasting, optimization, and risk management.

  • Monitor and interpret regulatory, environmental, and renewable integration developments affecting market structure and trading opportunities.

  • Maintain close engagement with exchanges, brokers, and market operators (JEPX, OCCTO, METI).

  • Contribute to team-level discussions on regional strategy, portfolio diversification, and technology adoption.
